CSA March Board and Committee Meetings Update

he 2019 bull sale season is complete and it was a very busy time for Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) staff who covered as many bull sales as possible. Randy, Sue and I kept busy, with one day requiring us to cover four sales. Overall, it was another successful bull sale run for Simmental, with Simmental sales once again some of the highlights of all breeds. Not all bulls sold in every sale of any breed and this should serve as a reminder that we, as seed-stock producers may have reached a saturation point relative to the size of the commercial cowherd in Canada. Simmental genetics have enjoyed wide spread acceptance in many herds but we need to be mindful that there is a limit to the number of bulls that any one breed, including Simmental, can successfully market. Congratulations goes out to all the breeders, sales managers and sales staff that marketed one of the largest number of Simmental bulls ever in Canada for a very strong average! In the midst of the bull sales, CSA staff and directors were also focused on the CSA Board and Committee meetings, as well as joining the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) directors for their board meeting. These meetings were held March 17th to 19th in Calgary and is always a busy time as we report on the progress made since our October meetings, discuss new business and plan for our summer and fall events. The meetings began with the FCSF board meeting which focused on planning the 2019 FCSF auction that will be held August 10th following the CSA Annual General Meeting in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. The directors also worked through the selection process of several FCSF Advancing Education Bursary applications and selected some very deserving recipients. Another set of applications will be reviewed during the October meetings. The CSA Promotion committee also met and on the agenda was a review of the Simmental Country and Commercial Country magazines. We are always looking for ways to improve production and content in our magazines while being mindful of efficiency and the bottom line financially. The 2018 Simmental Award of Excellence (AOE) show recognition program was reviewed and we will be working with the Provincial Simmental Associations to streamline and improve the program in some key areas. The new Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) approved Simmental RFID tag has been a great success and we have investigated the possibility of expanding availability into Quebec through ATQ. Unfortunately, it does not appear feasible at this time for the CSA to purchase the required inventory in order to service the producers using Simmental genetics in Quebec. We will continue to monitor the parameters of the ATQ program and should the requirements change then we will reassess this as a possible breed promotion opportunity. The Breed Improvement Committee (BIC) meeting then followed on Monday with discussion around computer and registry system processes and ways we can provide better service to the CSA membership. The topic of reducing the percentage of Simmental blood to 7/8 for Purebred status in bulls was on the agenda for the fifth consecutive year. After a lengthy discussion, the Breed Improvement committee decided to recommend to the CSA board that they adopt the American Simmental Association (ASA) upgrading table and reflect the same percentages and upgrading process as the American Simmental Association uses, including designating Purebred status for 7/8 Simmental bulls. Another topic of discussion was the status of Foundation females of another breed and that they be required to be registered in their respective breedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s herd-book like bulls of another breed are. Although it was felt that there would be benefits in moving beyond the historical unidentified commercial cow

to breed up from, the committee feels that there might be some cows eliminated from the process who may not be able to be registered. Lab turnaround times for parentage and DNA sample processing were reported to be as promised by Neogen and the new reduced pricing for various tests offered through the CSA has been appreciated. Scrotal and docility EPDs are under review and it was decided that further information is required before a decision is made on whether or not to proceed with them as the American Simmental Association is doing. The Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN) is in the funding application phase and is being moved forward by Canadian Beef Breeds Council, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and the Beef Cattle Research Council. AI Sire permits were also discussed with regards to exclusive use semen, particularly sourced from American bulls. The CSA will be implementing an AI Sire program that will limit registrations of progeny from bulls that have been identified as exclusive use. This is similar to processes used by the Canadian Charolais and Angus Associations and will cost $150 per bull requiring signatures from both the bull owner and the owner of the semen rights. Another change that will be implemented is a return to basic parentage testing requirements in order to register ET calves. For the past decade only one calf per flush required testing however in order to reduce the possibility of human error in all steps of the process, the CSA will now require that all ET calves be done.

As usual, the CSA Board of Director’s meeting wrapped up the three day session and included reporting and vetting of the previous day’s committee discussions. In addition to that, the YCSA report was given and highlighted the plans they have been making towards the 2019 National Classic in Quebec, as well as the implementation of the annual YCSA Activity fee that was requested by the YCSA board. This minimal fee will allow for better tracking of how many YCSA members are active in the program and in what regions of the country. All funds collected through the activity fee remains within the YCSA program for their use. Future locations for the CSA Conventions was discussed and as British Columbia is not interested in hosting the event in 2020, the Manitoba Simmental Association has offered to host us. The National Show rotation was also discussed and Ontario will be hosting the National Show at the Royal in 2019 and in 2022 which is their 100th Anniversary. The 2020 National show will be held at Agribition to celebrate its 50th show and it is hoped that the Alberta Simmental Association will host the National Show in 2021. Carcass EPD and Their Relation to Value

hen looking through bull sale catalogues, it is pretty evident that a lot of them include EPDs on the bulls, however these are often limited to Calving Ease, Growth and Maternal traits. This is quite logical, as the majority of bulls sold in Canada are going into cow/calf operations that either sell at weaning or after a brief backgrounding period. It is important however, to remember that all of these animals at some point enter the human food chain and that the overall value of our production in the beef industry is ultimately based on value of the animal as beef. The EPDs that appear in sale catalogues are easily associated with some value. For example, if calves are $2 per pound, it is relatively straightforward to understand that a sire who adds 20 pounds to his calves has an additional value of $40 per calf over a bull with an EPD of 0. Similarly, a sire that reduces calving difficulties may have a higher value in some operations due to lower labour requirements or more live calves. The CSA also provides these tools for carcass merit, however many of us are less familiar with how these traits relate to the value of a potential sire or his offspring. There is often large seasonality and regionality in carcass values, however let’s use the average value for the year 2018 as reported by Canfax for Alberta. Carcass Weight – fed cattle that are railed are sold on a carcass weight basis. Thus a heavier carcass is worth more gross dollars (all else being equal). The Carcass Weight EPD is similar to a weaning or yearling weight EPD and expresses differences in progeny carcass weight between sires’ offspring from the same group of cows. Current breed average is 25.9. Last year the average price was $153.68 CWT for steer carcasses. If we compare a bull with an EPD of 25.9 with a bull with CWT EPD of 0 and using 2018 values, the bull with 25.9 will sire steers worth $39.80 more because of increased carcass weight. Rib-Eye Area – rib-eye is part of the carcass that is measured and is a component of yield grade. As rib-eye increases retail product or lean yield will tend to increase. A REA EPD shows differences in progeny rib-eye size in square inches. We are not generally paid more for Rib-Eye, but as a key component of muscle score it is a major component of retail yield. Current average REA EPD is 0.78. A bull with an EPD of 0.78 will sire offspring that have an extra ¾” of rib-eye area compared to a sire with an EPD of 0. For the sake of our math, let’s assume that these calves will move up one muscle score category. Fat – fat thickness is the second part of the equation (with REA) that impacts yield. As fat levels increase, the yield or retail product declines. Fat has a somewhat more significant effect on yield than rib-eye size does, even thought the units are quite small. A bull with a larger fat EPD will sire calves that have more fat cover in a given feeding period than a bull with a smaller fat EPD. Fat EPDs are expressed in inches. Current breed average for fat is -0.129, so a sire with an EPD of -0.129 will sire calves with 13/100ths less backfat than a

sire with an EPD of 0. For Canadians, that is roughly 3.3 mm. This makes a BIG difference in terms of retail yield, as fat is a lot bigger influencer of retail product than muscle score. Yield (Fat x REA) Canada has just announced that they are dividing the yield classes into five categories. Yield grade classes are determined by muscle score and fat thickness. The muscle score is determined by the relative length x width of the Rib-Eye (Rib-Eye Area). Generally lower yield classes (yield grade 1 and 2) are worth more money per pound than carcasses with lower yield. This is fairly logical as a higher percentage of retail yield means that there is more beef available to sell out of the same weight of carcass. Some grids are paying premiums for yield grade 1 and 2 cattle. A premium as low as $5 per hundred weight would equate to a difference of $37.50 per calf on a 750 pound carcass and $45 on a 900 pound carcass. Marbling – marbling is another component of value when cattle are marketed on a quality grid. Marbling is expressed in marbling score units, however a simple way to think about it, is that a larger value indicates more intramuscular fat deposits over a given feeding period. This means that animals from parentage with higher marbling EPDs are more likely to grade in the choice or prime categories. Prime grades start at 8.0 marbling score units. Choice grades start at 5.0 marbling score units. Upper 2/3rds of choice are defined as being 6.0 and higher. Premiums are generally paid for cattle grading upper 2/3 choice and higher. It is basically a value threshold. Marbling premiums (choice select spread) will vary widely, however in 2018 it was roughly $10 CWT US. Currently, breed average marbling EPD is -0.11. This means a bull with an EPD of -0.11 will produce offspring with a tenth of a marbling score lower than a bull with an EPD of 0. If this causes the offspring to miss the choice cutoff, in order to be conservative let’s use $10 Canadian as the spread. The bull with the -0.11 will produce offspring that are worth $75 less on a 750 pound carcass, and $90 less on a 900 pound carcass than the bull with a 0 EPD. Total Value While we may not often look at carcass EPDs I think it is fairly evident that differences in carcass genetics can represent big value differences between offspring. So how do we get at the carcass genetics of a potential sire? The most basic, lowest cost methodology is to use carcass ultrasound and scan cattle at roughly a year of age, just the same way we would collect yearling weights or semen test sale bulls. Additional accuracy can be added by using DNA testing on cattle we are interested in. More involved, is feeding out either non select seedstock or commercial cattle from our genetics. All of these can be options for those interested in really targeting and adding to the value of beef in the beef industry. Stampede Steer Syndicate Group Supports Scholarships For Young Beef Producers By Lee Hart

eeing the dedication and hard work that young beef cattle producers put into showing cattle and learning about the beef industry is one of the main reasons Alberta Simmental breeder Ron Daley and cohorts have become established supporters of the Calgary Stampede Junior Steer Classic scholarship program. Over the past eight years the Friends of Ron Daley Steer Syndicate have raised more than $200,000 that helps make up the over $600,000 the show has been able to divvy up as scholarships and prize money among youth showing all breeds of steers at the annual Stampede livestock show since it has gone to a 21 and under junior show. “It starts with the kids,” says Daley who along with his wife Tammi Van Tighem, raise black and red Simmentals at Southpaw Cattle Co. near Carstairs, AB. The farm ran about 80 head of purebred Simmental cattle and now is getting back to an active program with a couple of their girls finished up with school and returning to help out. “We have three daughters who grew up raising and showing cattle. The commitment and hard work they and other young people put into not just raising and managing their cattle but how they present and market their animals at shows like these is truly impressive. I thought there must be someway to help support young people in the industry and acknowledge their efforts.” Daley, who is also owner of Data Scavenger Inc., a service-based data storing and sharing business in downtown Calgary approached Chub Lundago, then Chairman, Stampede Steer Show and Craig Scott, current chairman, for some ideas on what might be needed to help them grow.

At that time the long-running UFA Steer Classic was supported by the Calgary Stampede and awarded $10,000 per year in prize money to the Grand Champion Steer each year. It is an interesting story about how the first live auction went with this gang. Anyone who has been around the livestock industry knows how the bidding process works, but for my recently created cattle experts, this was a very quick and steep learning curve.” After the show and sale, the syndicate has the steer processed by a local abattoir, Balzac Meats, just north of Calgary. “And they are also pretty excited because not only did they support a young person at the show, they also have some excellent beef they can enjoy at home,” says Daley.

ifty years for a breed association is a relatively short time in the history of breeding livestock which makes the impact that the Simmental breed has made on the Canadian beef industry look even that much more remarkable. People who are history buffs, will be able to look back in our history and identify the herd letters of those that bred the cattle that influenced the Simmental breed over the years, however have you ever thought of other ways that you can leave your legacy in the breed and livestock industry? The evolution of the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) began through discussion between the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) and a handful of its members, some of whom were former Directors of the CSA. They shared the interest of creating a registered charity that would support further learning opportunities, scholarships, and research projects for the benefit of the Canadian Beef Industry through the Simmental breed, while also being able to recognize the donations in a charitable environment. By working closely with the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) and National Young Canadian Simmental (YCS) boards, the FCSF has been able to support youth activities by offering more than $12,000 in scholarships each year, as well as through leadership development opportunities; and most recently, bursaries for further learning outside of formal post-secondary education. Each year 15% of the funds raised through the FCSF auction have been allocated to the National YCS program. The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation works with the CSA as our shared values and philosophies reinforce the work that the CSA carries out for our membership. As one of the directors of the FCSF, it has been gratifying to see the support we have gathered through our annual auction held in conjunction with the National YCS show and CSA conference. Breeders and industry leaders from across Canada have supported the auction with generous and at times unique donations. The auction itself is one of the yearly events that brings many Simmental enthusiasts together either on site or through the internet to bid on the sale items and support the Foundation. Each year a Friend of the Foundation is recognized through the donation of Lot 1, a bred heifer. We have received donations from breeders from across Canada and this year’s donation is from Barlee Simmentals – Jerry and Laurie Barber from Shawville, Quebec. While Jerry and his family have a relatively small herd of 15 purebred Simmentals they recognize the valuable role of the Foundation so have generously donated a bred heifer from their quality herd. We thank them for this significant gift. During the 2018 auction, a young Simmental enthusiast commented to his “Papa” upon purchasing his new toy cow and stall set that is was “the most per pound” they had ever spent on a cow. He was a very eager bidder and very pleased when he gave the winning bid to own this new treasure. The auction is always an entertaining time to support a great cause. I wonder how much the famous perogies donated from Bonchuck Farms will bring this year, or who will be in the running for the Montreal Canadian hockey tickets from Keystone Livestock? As always I am sure there will be a battle between sets of Grandparents during the bidding on the toy cows. The fundraising auction is an excellent opportunity for everyone to become involved in the Foundation. Donators receive a charitable tax

receipt, while purchasers receive exposure through their purchase and the advertising that follows the event, not to mention the opportunity to often purchase exclusive genetics, art, experiences, and other valued items. The FCSF is more than just a fundraising auction each year. It is about leaving a legacy for future generations that have the similar backgrounds and beliefs; the belief in agriculture, Simmental cattle and supporting our youth as productive citizens. Consider this question “If your life was to end tomorrow, would you be proud of what you had left behind?” I am proud to say that through my volunteer work with the FCSF, my legacy in the agriculture industry will continue. Future generations may not have a direct connection to any of us but we will have played a small part in creating an asset that will continue to pay it forward for years to come. The Foundation has also been the recipient from several families that wished to have memorial donations made in the memory of their loved ones. I can’t think of a better way to acknowledge and continue the passion that our loved ones had for the Simmental breed and beef industry. These gestures have served in building the assets of the Foundation. As a board,we are committed to investing and dispersing those assets in a responsible way to ensure that the FCSF serves its purpose long into the future. The FCSF board also works with the CSA in reviewing the YCSA budgets to ensure that they meet our requirements of our support for their programming. No matter what the amount is that you have contributed to the Foundation, we are very conscious of the responsibility we have to managing and utilizing the funds to the very best of our ability. Succession planning has been a current topic at recent Agriculture industry events and estate planning is an important part of any long-term business plan. As you consider how you would like your farming assets to be distributed in the future, you may want to consider bequeathing some of the assets of your estate to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation. What a tremendous legacy to leave knowing that you will be aiding youth in their skill development and education for generations to come. To some a judging competition or a show heifer project might not look like skill development, but we know that youth who participate in events such as these are learning responsibility, how to win or lose graciously, and the ability to work as a team along with effective communication and planning skills. Compte-rendu des réunions du Conseil d’administration et des comités de l’ASC a saison 2019 des ventes de taureaux est maintenant terminée et le personnel de l’Association Simmental du Canada (ASC) a été très occupé et a été présent au plus grand nombre possible de ventes. Par exemple, moi, Sue et Randy avons dû couvrir jusqu’à quatre ventes la même journée. Globalement, les ventes de taureaux Simmental ont de nouveau connu beaucoup de succès, avec certaines ventes figurant parmi les meilleures de toutes les races. On a toutefois constaté que certains taureaux n’avaient pas trouvé d’acheteurs dans des ventes de taureaux de diverses races de boucherie et, en tant qu’éleveur de race pure, cela devrait nous rappeler qu’on risque d’arriver à un niveau de saturation par rapport à la taille du cheptel de vaches de boucherie commerciales au Canada. La génétique de race Simmental est très bien appréciée dans plusieurs troupeaux, mais nous devons demeurer bien conscient que, peu importe la race, il y a une limite au nombre de taureaux pouvant être vendus sur le marché. Nous tenons à féliciter tous les éleveurs, les gérants des ventes et leur personnel, qui ont permis encore une fois qu’un nombre record de taureaux soit vendus au Canada avec une forte moyenne de prix! En plein coeur de la période des ventes, l’attention des administrateurs et du personnel de l’ASC était également concentrée vers les réunions du Conseil d’administration et des comités de l’ASC, ainsi que pour celles du conseil d’administration de la Fondation des amis de la race Simmental (« FCSF »). Lors de ces réunions tenues du 17 au 19 mars à Calgary, nous avons discuté des développements survenus depuis nos réunions d’octobre 2018, en plus de parler de nouveaux dossiers et de planifier nos activités de l’été et de l’automne.

Nous avons tenu premièrement la réunion du conseil d’administration de la Fondation “FCSF”, en discutant surtout au sujet de l’encan 2019 de la Fondation, lequel se tiendra le 10 août prochain lors de l’Assemblée Générale Annuelle de l’ASC à Saint-Hyacinthe, au Québec. Les administrateurs ont aussi sélectionné quelques récipiendaires, parmi tous les dossiers reçus des candidats intéressés, lesquels se verront décerner une bourse dans le cadre du programme de bourses d’études de la Fondation. Les administrateurs analyseront une autre série de dossiers de candidats lors de leurs réunions en octobre 2019. Consultez le site internet au: http:// www.simmentalfoundation.com afin d’obtenir plus d’information au sujet des diverses opportunités de bourses d’études offertes via la race Simmental. Une rencontre du comité de promotion s’est tenue, avec comme principal sujet de discussion une analyse de la situation pour les revues Simmental Country et Commercial Country. Tout en gardant bien à l’esprit la réalité financière et le besoin d’être efficace, nous avons cherché de nouveaux moyens pour améliorer tant la production que le contenu des revues. Nous avons également discuté du programme de reconnaissance des expositions en Prix d’excellence 2018 de la race Simmental, et nous allons travailler en collaboration avec les associations provinciales Simmental afin d’améliorer et de simplifier certains aspects importants du programme. Nous enregistrons un réel succès avec les nouvelles étiquettes RFID Simmental approuvées par l’Agence canadienne d’identification du bétail (“CCIA”), et nous avons analysé la possibilité que des étiquettes puissent également être offertes au Québec par l’entremise

d’ATQ. À l’heure actuelle, il est malheureusement apparu que l’ASC ne pouvait pas acheter l’inventaire requis d’étiquettes pour répondre aux besoins de producteurs utilisant la génétique de race Simmental au Québec. Nous allons continuer de suivre les exigences du programme chez ATQ et, advenant que les règles viennent à changer, nous pourrions alors reconsidérer cette opportunité de promotion de la race. La réunion du comité d’amélioration de la race (« BIC ») s’est ensuite tenue le lundi, lors de laquelle nous avons discuté de nos procédures d’enregistrement, de nos ressources informatiques et de nouvelles idées pour améliorer encore davantage les services aux membres de l’ASC. Le sujet concernant la possibilité d’accepter les taureaux ayant 7/8 de sang Simmental comme étant pur-sang était inscrit à l’agenda pour une cinquième année de suite. Suite à une longue discussion, le comité d’amélioration de la race a décidé d’acheminer une résolution au conseil d’administration de l’ASC, laquelle leur recommande d’adopter la charte d’augmentation du sang de la race employée par l’Association Simmental Américaine (ASA), et d’utiliser les mêmes pourcentages et la même procédure qu’ils utilisent, y compris la désignation de taureaux 7/8 de sang de la race comme étant des taureaux pur-sang. La situation concernant le statut de femelles de fondation d’une autre race a également été discuté, en particulier l’exigence demandant qu’elles soient obligatoirement enregistrées dans leurs livres généalogiques respectifs, tout comme c’est le cas pour les taureaux d’autres races. Bien qu’on ait constaté certains avantages à exiger davantage que l’exigence historique permettant d’accroître le pourcentage de sang de la race à partir d’une vache commerciale non identifiée, le comité croit tout de même qu’avec une telle procédure, il pourrait y avoir des vaches éliminées car celles-là ne pourraient pas être enregistrées. On a pris connaissance d’un rapport provenant de Neogen, concernant le délai de traitement d’une analyse de parenté et la procédure de collecte d’échantillon d’ADN. On a de plus exprimé notre satisfaction envers la réduction de prix des divers tests effectués par l’intermédiaire de l’ASC. Les ÉPD de la circonférence scrotale et de la docilité sont présentement revus, nous avons décidé qu’il était nécessaire d’obtenir davantage d’information avant de prendre une décision quant à leur mise en place, tout comme le fait l’Association Simmental Américaine. On est présentement en demande de financement pour le Réseau Canadien d’Amélioration des bovins de boucherie (“Canadian Beef Improvement Network- CBIN”), lequel projet est appuyé par le Conseil Canadien des races de boucherie (« CBBC »), l’Association Canadienne des éleveurs de bétail (« CCA ») et le Conseil de recherche sur les bovins de boucherie (« CBRC »). Des discussions se sont également tenues par rapport aux permis d’utilisation des taureaux d’insémination artificielle, spécifiquement en ce qui concerne la semence

pour usage exclusif, provenant principalement de taureaux américains. L’ASC mettra en place un programme touchant les taureaux d’insémination artificielle, laquelle fera en sorte que le nombre de descendants issus de taureaux identifiés comme étant exclusifs pouvant être enregistrés sera restreint. Il s’agit en fait d’un processus employé par l’Association Canadienne Charolais et les Association Angus, par lequel le propriétaire du taureau et le détenteur du droit d’utilisation de la semence signeront un permis d’utilisation au coût de 150 $ par taureau. On a de plus décidé de mettre en place un autre changement, soit de revenir aux exigences de base pour l’analyse de la parenté lors de demande d’enregistrement de veaux issus de transfert d’embryons. Au cours de la dernière décennie, on demandait à ce que la parenté d’un seul veau produit pour une récolte d’embryons soit analysée, toutefois afin de réduire les risques d’erreur humaine à toutes les étapes du processus, l’ASC demandera dorénavant que tous les veaux provenant d’une récolte d’embryons soient analysés. Comme d’habitude, la rencontre du Conseil d’administration est venue conclure les trois jours de réunions, alors que les administrateurs ont pris connaissance et confirmé les discussions des jours précédents. De même, on a pris connaissance du rapport des Jeunes éleveurs Simmental (“YCSA”), lequel touchait principalement la planification de la Classique Nationale 2019 devant se tenir au Québec, ainsi que la mise en place d’un frais annuel pour les activités de l’ASC, demandé par le Conseil d’administration des YCSA. Ce frais minimum nous permettra de mieux valider combien de membres sont actifs dans le programme et dans quelles régions du Canada ils proviennent. Tous les fonds ainsi recueillis via ce prélevé sur les activités des jeunes éleveurs demeureront pour l’usage exclusif du programme des YCSA. On a discuté de la localisation des futures conventions de l’ASC et, puisqu’il n’y a pas d’intérêt en Colombie-Britannique pour accueillir l’évènement en 2020, l’Association Simmental du Manitoba s’est offerte pour nous accueillir. On a également parlé de l’alternance au niveau du Concours National de la race, l’Ontario sera l’hôte en 2019 du Concours National lors de la Royale, de même qu’en 2022, lequel correspondra à leur 100e anniversaire. En 2020, le Concours National se tiendra à l’Agribition, afin de célébrer leur 50e anniversaire, et nous espérons que l’Association Simmental de l’Alberta pourra être l’hôte du Concours National en 2021. Is Your Bull’s Penis Cut Or Broken?

umerous times throughout the breeding season calls come in to veterinary clinics in regards to swellings along the sheath of bulls. In many instances a favorable outcome is highly attainable and with today’s bull prices this may be good news for the client. Purebred breeders often may get bull purchasers phoning with these same issues and definitely refer them on as many times breeding function can be returned to normal. If bulls are insured the insurance companies need you to do your due diligence and get the bulls attended to and treated if that is possible. Location of the swelling tells a lot about its cause. Generally if the penis has been broken the swelling is just ahead of the scrotum. Swellings lower down on the sheath are common with lacerations to either the penis or the prepuce. A broken penis is the result of a rent created in the sinus of the penis. Blood accumulates in the sinus causing the erection. A sudden bend to an erect penis such as being hit when breeding or impacting the penis against the cow will cause such a break. Then in subsequent breeding attempts blood is pumped out through this defect. The blood is trapped in this location causing the visible swelling or hematoma. The degree of swelling therefore depends on how many breeding attempts have been made before the producer can pull the bull from the breeding herd. Some bulls will be turned off sexually and may not attempt further breeding. To diagnose a cut penis your veterinarian will either sedate the bull to have a good look at his penis or use an electro ejaculator to be able to visualize it. Cuts are the result of breeding in bush, over fences, rough breedings, sudden bends to an erect penis, overshooting the mark, etc. Some bulls are more prone because of their aggressive nature. A few polled bulls have a tendency to have their sheath prolapsed constantly and drying out which may also lead to a tear. The bos indicus (Brahman types) have more problems with prolapsed sheaths. All these things greatly increase the likelihood of lacerations and tears. Complications involve several scenarios, which can be vastly different in each case. Large cuts can result in infection and subsequent scarring which could prevent the bull from extending his penis therefore not achieving intromission. I personally have seen a case where 100% of a person’s herd was open because the herd bull had a scarred down penis from an injury the previous year. Another very good reason to semen evaluate and make sure the penis 14

can be fully extended. If severe swelling has occurred the prepuce may be prolapsed. This can also occur with broken penises and the resulting drying swelling and cracking of the prolapsed prepuce causes a very serious complication. Hydrotherapy, lots and lots of hydrotherapy, with medicating ointments is often prescribed and keeping bulls in the shade to further reduce drying. The swelling must be brought down to allow retraction of the prepuce back into the sheath. In all these cases the bulls can be immediately shipped for emergency slaughter as long as no medication has been given. However, a vast majority can be treated so depending on age of bull and his value to your herd this option is always available. The bull will be out of commission for some time so a replacement bull may be needed and the rest of the breeding season may likely be missed. Treatment is not complicated or costly just some labor and the tincture of time with sexual rest resolve many of them. Broken penises require hydrotherapy initially and then a long sexual rest. A few months later the bull may be tested to see if erection is possible. About 50% of the cases or less will heal (if caught early before large swellings have occurred) but they do have a higher incidence of reoccurring than normal bulls. Surgery was tried more often in the past but because of the large blood clot that formed, infection is a very real complication. Prognosis is no better than the conservative medical approach. The blood clot is absorbed over time and as long as adhesions are minimized with hydrotherapy infection is quite unlikely. Cut penises involve careful scrutinization by your veterinarian. Flushing medication up the sheath along with hydrotherapy and systemic drugs are used in bad cases. Minor cases will be left with just sexual rest and time. If breeding is allowed the laceration may be extended and also blood is very detrimental to sperm health. With fresh cuts this mixing of blood and sperm can result in very poor fertility. We know that many minor cuts do heal on their own from the scars we see on penises at semen evaluation in subsequent years. These cuts most likely occurred the

previous breeding season. The seriousness of the injury will determine prognosis and estimated return to function. Some minor cuts will be healed and the bull ready to use in two to three weeks. They should be checked to make sure complete healing has occurred. A high percentage of cuts will heal however keeping that bull till the next breeding season may be warranted depending on the value of the bull. That choice again is made based on the value of the bull, his age and when in the breeding season the laceration occurred. When checking your bulls during the breeding season watch for full extension when breeding, blood on breeding

and keep a careful watch of the sheath area for any abnormal swellings. If anything is noticed pull them immediately and get them attended to. This is extremely critical in single sire breeding Above: Prepucial Injury groups because cut or broken penises do not result in cows getting bred. The value of purebred ownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; herd bulls further illustrates the need to move on these quickly and return them to future breeding function. Preserving good genetics is worth it. Collecting semen for freezing can even be done on bulls with scarred down penises so donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give up if there is good value in the genetics. Cuts and broken penises are unfortunate results in the breeding season and are not predictable. The one prevention may be to run single sire mating groups but that comes with its own different set of risks and is not a guarantee you may still get a cut or broken penis from breeding. It has long been thought that some corkscrew deviations become broken penises. We see more on yearling and two year old bulls but they are the highest age population in bulls and especially the yearlings may have some awkwardness breeding.

Les ÉPD et leur relation avec leur valeur monétaire

uand on fait le tour de quelques catalogues de ventes de taureaux, on constate que plusieurs d’entre eux incluent maintenant des ÉPD sur les taureaux, par contre ceux-ci se limitent souvent à des caractères tels que la facilité de vêlage, la croissance et les caractères maternels. Cela est plutôt logique puisque la majorité des taureaux vendus au Canada s’en vont dans les troupeaux vache-veau qui vendent leurs veaux soit au sevrage ou après une courte période de semi-finition. Toutefois, il est important de se rappeler que tous ces animaux entreront dans la chaîne alimentaire à un moment ou l’autre et, par conséquent, la valeur globale de notre production dans l’industrie bovine est basée sur la valeur de l’animal en termes de viande de bœuf. Les ÉPD publiés dans les catalogues de vente peuvent être facilement associés avec une certaine valeur. Par exemple, si le prix des veaux est de 2 $ / livre, on comprendra assez bien qu’un taureau ajoutant 20 livres de plus à ses veaux apportera une valeur additionnelle de 40 $ par veau, en comparaison avec un taureau ayant un ÉPD de 0. De la même manière, un taureau améliorateur pour la facilité de vêlage pourrait avoir une valeur plus élevée dans certaines fermes, en raison d’exigences en main d’oeuvre moins élevées ou bien d’un plus grand nombre de veaux vivants. L’ASC publie également ces outils pour les caractères liés à la qualité de la carcasse, toutefois plusieurs d’entre nous ne sommes pas familiers à savoir comment ces caractères sont en fait reliés à la valeur d’un taureau ou de sa progéniture. Il y a souvent des différences régionales et entre les saisons au niveau de la valeur des carcasses, mais servons-nous par exemple de la valeur moyenne pour l’année 2018 en Alberta, selon les données de Canfax. Poids de la carcasse – les bouvillons abattus et classés sont vendus sur la base d’un poids de la carcasse. Par conséquent, une carcasse plus lourde vaudra davantage en dollars totaux (toutes autres choses étant égales). L’ÉPD du poids de la carcasse ressemble à l’ÉPD du poids au sevrage ou à un an, il exprime les différences de poids des carcasses entre les descendants issus d’un même groupe de vaches. La moyenne de la race est présentement de 25,9. L’année dernière, le prix moyen des carcasses de bouvillons était de 153,68 $ / 100 livres. Si on compare un taureau ayant un ÉPD de 25,9 avec un ÉPD du poids de la carcasse de 0, et en utilisant les valeurs de 2018, le taureau ayant un ÉPD de 25,9 engendrera des bouvillons valant 39,80 $ de plus, en raison de leur poids de la carcasse plus élevée. Surface de l’oeil-de-longe – l’oeil-de-longe est une partie de la carcasse qu’on mesure et qui est une composante de la classe de rendement. Lorsque l’oeil-de-longe augmente, la viande commercialisable ou la viande maigre ont tendance à également augmenter. Un ÉPD de la surface de l’oeil-de-longe exprime les différences chez la progéniture de la grosseur de

l’œil-de-longe mesurée en pouces carrés. On n’est généralement pas payé plus pour l’oeil-de-longe mais, comme il s’agit d’un bon indicateur du degré de musculature, cela devient une composante du rendement en viande commercialisable. L’ÉPD moyen de la surface de l’œil-de-longe est de 0,78. Un taureau ayant un ÉPD de 0,78 engendrera des veaux possédant ¾ pouce de surface additionnelle d’oeil-de-longe, comparativement à un taureau ayant un ÉPD de 0. Pour les besoins de la mathématique, prenons pour acquis que ces veaux seront classés dans le niveau correspondant de la cote de musculature. Gras – l’épaisseur de gras est la deuxième partie de l’équation (avec la surface de l’oeil-de-longe) qui aura un effet sur le rendement. Lorsque les niveaux de gras augmentent, le rendement ou la viande commercialisable diminue. Le gras apporte un effet significativement plus important sur le rendement que peut apporter l’œil-de-longe, malgré le fait que les unités d’expression du caractère soient très petites. Un taureau ayant un ÉPD plus élevé pour le niveau de gras engendrera des veaux possédant plus de couverture de gras durant une certaine période de leur engraissement, comparativement à un taureau ayant un ÉPD plus bas pour le gras. Les ÉPD du gras sont exprimés en pouces. L’ÉPD moyen de la race est actuellement de – 0,129, ainsi un taureau avec un ÉPD de – 0,129 engendrera des veaux possédant 13/100e moins de gras dorsal, comparés avec les veaux ayant un ÉPD de 0. Pour les Canadiens, cela équivaut environ à 3,3 mm. Cela fait une GRANDE différence en termes de rendement en viande commercialisable, car le gras apporte une influence supérieure sur le rendement en viande que la cote de musculature. Rendement (Gras x Surface de l’oeil-de-longe) On a récemment annoncé que les classes de rendement des carcasses au Canada seraient divisées en cinq catégories. Les classes de rendement sont déterminées d’après la cote de musculature et l’épaisseur de gras dorsal. La cote de musculature est déterminée par la longueur relative x la largeur de l’œil-de-longe (surface de l’œil-de-longe). En général, les classes de rendement avec les chiffres les plus bas (classes 1 et 2) valent davantage d’argent par livre que les carcasses ayant un rendement plus faible. Cela est plutôt logique, car un pourcentage plus élevé de rendement commercialisable signifie qu’il y a plus de viande de bœuf à vendre pour le même poids de carcasse. Des primes sont parfois payés pour des grilles de classement, pour les bovins ayant une carcasse soit de niveau 1 ou 2. Une prime aussi faible que 5 $ par 100 livres de poids pourrait équivaloir à une différence de 37,50 $ par veau, avec une carcasse pesant 750 livres, et 45 $ par veau pour une carcasse de 900 livres. Persillage – le persillage est une autre composante de la valeur lorsqu’un animal est commercialisé d’après une grille

de paiement. Le persillage est exprimé en termes d’unités de score du persillage et, si vous voulez avoir une façon simple d’y référer, une valeur plus élevée correspond à davantage de dépôt de gras intramusculaire durant une période donnée d’engraissement. Cela veut dire que les bovins dont les parents ont des ÉPD plus élevés au niveau du persillage ont davantage de chance d’être classés dans les catégories « Canada Prime » ou « Canada Choix ». La catégorie “Canada Prime” commence avec une cote de persillage de 8.0 unités. La catégorie “Canada Choix” commence avec une cote de persillage de 5.0 unités. Les deux tiers supérieurs de la catégorie “Canada Choix” correspondent à une cote de 6.0 et plus. Des primes sont généralement payées pour des bovins avec un classement plus élevé qu’aux deux tiers de la catégorie “Canada Choix”. Il s’agit en fait d’un seuil minimum en termes de valeur. Les primes touchant le persillage (écart entre les catégories Choix et Sélect) peuvent varier beaucoup, toutefois en 2018, elles étaient autour de 10 $ US / 100 lb. L’ÉPD moyen pour le persillage est présentement de 0,11. Cela voudrait donc dire qu’un taureau ayant un ÉPD de -0,11 engendrera des descendants ayant environ un dixième de cote de persillage de moins qu’un taureau avec un ÉPD de 0. Cela ferait en sorte que les carcasses de ces descendants n’obtiendraient pas le seuil minimum de la catégorie Choix. De façon conservatrice, imaginons que l’écart entre les catégories Choix et Sélect est de 10 $ Can. Le taureau ayant un ÉPD de

-0,11 produira des descendants qui vaudront 75 $ de moins pour une carcasse de 750 lb, et 90 $ de moins pour une carcasse de 900 lb, comparativement à un taureau ayant un ÉPD de 0. Valeur totale Bien qu’on ne regarde pas souvent les ÉPD des caractères de carcasse, je crois qu’il est très évident que les différences au niveau du potentiel génétique des caractères liés aux carcasses peuvent représenter de grandes différences au niveau de la valeur des descendants. Comment alors peuton obtenir le potentiel génétique pour les caractères liés aux carcasses chez un taureau qui nous intéresse ? La méthode de base la moins coûteuse consiste à recourir aux ultrasons et à faire mesurer les bovins vers l’âge d’un an, de la même façon qu’on peut recueillir des poids à un an ou qu’on fasse tester la semence chez des taureaux offerts en vente. On pourra accroître la précision en ayant également recours à l’analyse de l’ADN chez les animaux qui nous intéressent. De plus, il faudrait inclure des données d’engraissement provenant d’animaux de race pure non sélectionnés ou des bovins commerciaux provenant de nos lignées génétiques. Our Deepest Sympathies Sterling Kenneth Burns – 1949 - 2019 Sterling passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019 (his 70th birthday) in the Perth hospital surrounded by the love of his girls. He was the cherished husband of Mona L (Hartin) Burns, dear father of Shana (Daryl) Ziebarth and Lana (Barry) Dean, proud Poppa to Coady and Brooklyn and proud Grandpa to Ryland, Marissa and McKenzie. Sterling was a long time breeder of Simmental cattle and retired after 25 years with Lafarge Canada. Sterling’s family wish to thank the doctors and staff at the Perth hospital for the professional and compassionate care they provided.

Our Deepest Sympathies Robert “Bob” E. Wilson – January 9, 1941 – April 5, 2019 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bob on April 5, 2019 at the Foothills Country Hospice at the age of 78 after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. Bob will forever be remembered by his partner in life Louise Gale and her family (whom he called his own) daughters Tanice Belding and Jodie Berrington; grandchildren Carlee Belding, Blake Belding and Allie Kulba and great grandson Benett. He is also survived by his sister Helen (Henry) Kroker, brother in law Bob Weller, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and many, many friends. Bob was predeceased by his sister Yvonne Weller in 2003. Bob was born at New Brigden, Alberta on January 9, 1941 to John Edgar (Ed) Wilson and Lea Blanche Lemire. He lived on the family farm until June 1968 when he moved to Calgary (with then wife Joyce) to manage Rudiger Ranch, a purebred Charolais operation, until 1970. In the fall of 1971 he began a career with Transcon Livestock Corp., a purebred cattle sales management company, that was to last for approximately 40 years. Bob traveled many thousands of miles doing a job he greatly enjoyed. During this time he made many life long friends all across Canada and a very deep and special bond with Rodney James, Bob and Heather James and Jay Good. He also worked for a short time at the Calgary Stockyards, for two years with his cousin Harvey Bourassa, order buying cattle and as an insurance adjuster for Agriculture Financial Services Corp.

In 1991 Bob moved to Okotoks to live with Louise. Her family also lived in Okotoks and this new found family gave him a different purpose that he enjoyed very much. The greatest joy and light of Bob’s life was granddaughter Allie who came into his life as a baby. He did all the things with her that he missed by not having a family of his own. Bob was a mentor and friend to so many of us. When it came to dignity and integrity and how to set an example of how to treat others, Bob Wilson was a giant of a man.

Congratulations McIntosh Livestock! 2018 Purebred Breeder of the Year Blair, Stephanie, Seth and Carter McIntosh own and operate McIntosh Livestock located at Maymont, SK. The farm is a mixed grain and cattle operation. Blair purchased his first Simmental at the age of 13 while growing up in Ontario, and when he made the move to Saskatchewan in the year 2000 he brought a small herd with him. Our first Saskatchewan female purchase was in 2003 when we bought IPU Pocahontas 139M. She was a great cow who produced extremely well for us. A majority of our herd now trace back to her. We began exhibiting our own purebred Simmental in 2003 and our first year at Agribition in the Simmental barn was 2005, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been here every year since! We feel privileged to have many friends and mentors from across many breeds. The Simmental barn is home for us though, and what makes this breed so great is all the enthusiastic breeders making a real effort every single day of the year to breed great cattle. Our goal at McIntosh Livestock is to produce sound and functional bulls for the commercial cattleman. But we also really love a beautiful show female! We at McIntosh Livestock were surprised as well as humbled to learn we were receiving this award. It is truly an honour to be recognized by your peers in such a way. Thank You so very much.

Advancing Education Bursary Award winners for the Spring of 2019 Alexandra Lee

Alongside his parents, Riley owns and operates Ultra Livestock outside of Carstairs, AB. Here they breed 220 head of purebred red and black Simmental and Simmental commercial cattle. Most recently, Riley has been very excited to introduce Fleckvieh and Fullbloods into his herd. Riley consigns females to the Sim Power Bred Heifer Sale and Friday Night Lights and they have their annual Ultra/Czechmate Bull Sale in February. Funds provided to Riley from this bursary will allow Riley to make new partnerships and provide him with education on how breeding compares over there to here.

Lisa Reich and her family run, Reich Farm by Tomahawk, AB, where they have raised Simmental cattle all her life and she owns a small herd of red and black Simmental cattle. This is Lisa’s third year of being on the Alberta YCSA board and she is the current president. Lisa has also been on the national board for the last two years. She is now a Vet Medical Assistant at the Rocky Rapids Vet in Drayton Valley. Completing this AI course will allow Lisa to expand the purebred side of their farm and advance her career if she could get hired on to a breeding farm.

Bursary Funds went towards: Artificial Insemination Course

Cathryn grew up on her family’s cow-calf farm near Calahoo, AB where she has been involved with Simmental cattle. Cathryn has been on the YCSA since 2006, on the Alberta YCSA board since 2012 and was Alberta’s representative on the National YCSA board from 2015-2017. Cathryn is passionate about the agriculture industry and enjoys learning and teaching others about it. Cathryn graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree in 2017 and is currently finishing her Bachelor of Education degree. Funds from the FCSF bursary will give Cathryn the ability to advance the genetics of her Simmental herd by breeding her females to outcross genetics.

From feeding to record keeping, Alexandra manages and operates the purebred and commercial cattle herds at Cross Bar Anchor Ranch. She has taken an interest in showing cattle and has participated in many junior and open shows. Alexandra would like to thank the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for providing young Simmental breeders with the opportunity to expand our knowledge and for presenting her with the Advancing Education Bursary Award. These funds will give Alexandra the opportunity to start her own purebred herd.

Tia Schram

Tia Schram is from Bruderheim, AB where her family owns and operates North Hill Simmentals. They have 550 head of Simmental cattle and grain farm 2000 acres. Tia currently sits on the Alberta Young Canadian Simmental Association (AYCSA) board and shows cattle year round through junior and open shows. Bursary funds provided to Tia are going towards Bursary Funds went her trip to a Woman’s Ag Conference. This towards: Partial travel conference will provide her with self-marketing, time costs for Woman’s management and organizational skills needed in Ag Conference in the business side of the Agricultural Industry. The FCSF will allocate a maximum of $5000 per fiscal year with a maximum of $1000 per applicant. Applications will be reviewed by the FCSF board at the spring and fall board meetings. • Must be a member of the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) and or the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) • Must be 25 years of age or younger at time of application • Money applied for must be put towards training or travel for Conferences and Agricultural events to further knowledge and education in the Agriculture industry. • Applicants will have one year from the time awarded the bursary to use the funds. After a year has passed applicants will have to reapply. All applications must be typed out and submitted to the FCSF by March 1 and October 1 of each year in order to be considered for approval at the spring and fall board meetings.

he Canadian Beef Breeds Council’s 25th Annual General Meeting was held in Calgary, Alberta and was attended by a cross section of cattle producers, livestock exporters, genetic companies and industry organization representatives. CBBC is pleased to announce the 2019 Board of Directors: Roger Peters (President), Jay Cross (Vice President), Garner Deobald, David Sibbald, Bruce Holmquist, Stephen Scott, Reed Rigney, Myles Immerkar, Ken Friesen, Kasey Phillips, Terry White and Dennis Serhienko. President Roger Peters indicated “CBBC is entering a new phase in the further development of the seedstock sector in advancing our goals of producing the world’s best purebred cattle and increasing market share in sales of purebred cattle, semen and embryos, both domestically and internationally.” The vision of CBBC is to be the world leader in developing profitable and sustainable beef cattle genetics. Its mission is to be the catalyst advancing the Canadian beef cattle seedstock sector through unified representation, strategic alliances and implementation of innovative technology. The mandate of CBBC is to support the Canadian seedstock sector by developing partnerships that advance genetic improvement, research, extension services, information dissemination and our role in Canada’s National Beef Strategy; promote Canadian beef genetics both domestically and internationally by identifying market opportunities and

Simmental on the Move

ood News! Congratulations to all the Simmental seedstock suppliers on a great winter/spring bull sale season. Bull sales for Simmental breeders across the country have been strong to say the least and exceptional in many cases. Compared to bull sales for other breeds, the demand for Simmental genetics has been massive in terms of number of bulls sold, average prices and the top end bids have been very exciting. This issue carries results of the January through March events. You will be able to read about the bulls that were in demand and get an insight into the final results across the country. On this magazine’s pages you will see pictures and information from the firms that are leaders in the seedstock business that are doing lots of things correctly to develop a breeding and marketing plan plus have a desire to not only continue their own success but also do their part to help build a confident, enviable track record for the breed as a whole. Bull sale season is, of course, extremely interesting to me. Over the past decades I have always tried to stay abreast of happenings of all the breeds, in the attempt to see the bigger picture of the whole beef business – not just a narrow focus of just one breed’s events. The traditional 10 year beef price cycles come and go, drought or worldwide economic crisis

can change the Ag commodity scene and simple supply and demand factors will affect the attitudes of cattlemen about the price they are willing to spend for bulls. Considering everything though, the Canadian Simmental bull sale season was extremely good – probably as good as any breed in the country. One advantage Simmental breeders can offer commercial cattlemen is a variety of types of bulls to suit several different requirements. Within the registered Simmental population, there are fullbloods, domestic purebreds and percentage bulls for starters. Add to that, several options for color including red and white, solid red or black, plus blaze faced bulls lend options to match with whatever the commercial cowherd needs. A reminder for those selling bulls though. Be sure to transfer the registration papers on those bulls to the new owners. With the new owners’ mailing address and email address entered into the Canadian Simmental Association system, they will receive our Simmental Commercial Country magazine issues free of charge twice each year – in September and January to stay up on the positive Simmental news and events. Help us keep this valuable list as large as possible so they can continually receive the good news of the Simmental business.
